I attended the SEMCOG General Assembly Meeting this past Thursday and took the Walking Tour of the Mount Clemens Downtown Revitalization Project. My tour guide was the Community Development Director Brian Tingley. I found it very informative and with the DTP forward effort that is underway I thought I would share some information I learned with a few pictures I took.
- It was over a $6M project and over half of the funds were obtained from outside sources. From the Mount Clemens DDA page:
“The DRP is funded by a $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, secured by Representative John James; $813,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; $800,000 from the City of Mount Clemens’ general fund; $334,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act; and $200,000 from the Downtown Development Authority’s reserve funds.” - The scope was complete renovation of Macomb Place. This included implementing curbless streets, sewer upgrades, parking lot repaving and landscaping. They experienced some flooding in the past but not as significant as we have experienced. The upgrades appear to have resolved this issue. They used pervious mortar material when installing the pavers.
- Will be installing a “fountain stage”. This is a stage with a water feature (fountain).
- They removed some trees to allow for more open space.
- This project was several years in the making, and they are starting to plan for updating main street.
I thought it was worth sharing as our DTP Forward design includes some of the same features.
